Foul is Fair by Hannah Capin (arc)

About the book:

Hannah Capin’s Foul is Fair is a bloody, thrilling revenge fantasy for the girls who have had enough. Golden boys beware: something wicked this way comes.

Jade and her friends Jenny, Mads, and Summer rule their glittering LA circle. Untouchable, they have the kind of power other girls only dream of. Every party is theirs and the world is at their feet. Until the night of Jade’s sweet sixteen, when they crash a St. Andrew’s Prep party. The night the golden boys choose Jade as their next target.

They picked the wrong girl.

Sworn to vengeance, Jade transfers to St. Andrew’s Prep. She plots to destroy each boy, one by one. She’ll take their power, their lives, and their control of the prep school’s hierarchy. And she and her coven have the perfect way in: a boy named Mack, whose ambition could turn deadly.

About the author:
Hannah Capin is the author of Foul is Fair and The Dead Queens Club, a feminist retelling of the wives of Henry VIII. When she isn’t writing, she can be found singing, sailing, or pulling marathon gossip sessions with her girl squad. She lives in Tidewater, Virginia.

Blurbs:
“Fierce, vicious, and electric. If books had teeth, Foul Is Fair would have fangs. Capin’s language glitters dark and her writing cuts deep. Revenge is a dish best served by this deliciously unapologetic coven.” – Laurie Elizabeth Flynn, author of Firsts and Last Girl Lied To

“Capin’s writing will seduce you with its beauty and then, when you least suspect it, slice you to the bone—just like Foul is Fair’s captivating, vicious, entirely unforgettable heroine, Jade.” – Layne Fargo, author of Temper and co-host of Unlikeable Female Characters Podcast

“Vicious and beautifully brutal, Foul is Fair gives a sword to every girl who has ever been a victim and makes them a warrior. This book is pulls no punches and will make anyone think twice before uttering the phrase ‘just a girl’. An unapologetic feminist battle-cry that leaves you breathless and thirsting for vengeance.” – Sonia Hartl, author of Have a Little Faith in Me

“Foul is Fair delivers the story of a girl who snatches control back from a world that stole it away, through whatever means necessary. Hannah Capin deftly combines stunningly lyrical prose with the raw power of engulfing fury, sending a message written in blood. In a world where too many are forced into silence, this book roars back.” – S. Gonzales, author of The Law of Inertia and Only Mostly Devastated

Review:

The plot of the story was interesting and the writing okay, but I couldn’t connect with the characters at all. I was hoping for some redeeming qualities in the flashbacks when you get glimpses of who the main protagonist and her friends were before the ill fated night that started the whole storyline, but those showcased four spoiled, bored and manipulative girls instead.

I read around 30% until I allowed myself to put it down and “dnf” it (did not finish). I sincerely hope there is a redeeming story arc in this story though. It would give it a depth that I think a story like this needs.

No matter what I think though, there will be lots of people who read this and who will enjoy it for it’s vengeance storyline that feels like watching a mix of Gossip Girl and Mean girls with a darker approach. Maybe you’ll like it more than me!

A huge thank you to the publisher Wednesday Books who kindly sent me this advanced reading copy! I’m always grateful for the opportunity to experience new stories!

Doctor Dearest by R.S. Grey (arc)

I love this story and, as usual when reading anything by R.S. Grey, I had a hard time letting it go once I started reading! This book revolves around doctors (two in particular of course, it IS a romance after all) and we get to experience tropes like forced proximity, brother’s best friend/best friend’s sister and a slight age gap. Three very good tropes when well done and R.S. Grey knows how to spin them into something GOOD.

As a whole I loved both the cast of characters and their dynamics, even though the protagonists were a bit off sometimes, but luckily it mostly read like human flaws and didn’t detract from the story.

I was eagerly anticipating some heartwarming moments when I realized that the protagonists work with children as their main patients and, to my delight, there were a chapter or two where I nearly melted when a certain little toddler entered the scene. I was hoping that they would adopt her, but alas so much cuteness probably WOULD have melted me into a puddle for real.

For the rom com loving reader, you can’t go wrong with an R.S. Grey book and Doctor Dearest is a great book to start with!

Synopsis:

Natalie

Dr. Easton is part man, part myth.
He’s a formidable surgeon. Highly respected in his field.
He also happens to be an ex-collegiate quarterback with a classically handsome face.
Are you catching on yet?
He’s horrible.
Beautiful.
A walking Ralph Lauren ad.
He’s also so off limits he should come with a warning label: This way lies heartache.

Not only is he an attending at the hospital where I’m training, he’s also my brother’s best friend. If you’ve lost count, that’s two reasons why I plan on putting this ridiculous crush behind me. Besides, it’s definitely not mutual.

Dr. Easton has never once paid me special attention. No tempting smirks. Not even one subtle innuendo. To him, I’m just another resident—all but invisible.

Connor

For the last five years, I’ve mentored Natalie in the OR, stayed in line, and kept my hands to myself, but it’s been agonizing.

Natalie is trouble in scrubs. A walking temptation I’ve been forced to ignore.

For so long, I’ve wanted her in silence. By the time fate finally gets around to throwing me a bone, my patience has run out.

Natalie’s brother is leaving town, and he wants me to watch over her while he’s gone.

He has no idea how I feel about her.
Neither does she.
But she will.

Haven’t you heard good things come to those who wait, Natalie?
Well…I’ve done my waiting.

Tweet Cute by Emma Lord (ARC)

Synopsis:

Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming — mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.

Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time.

All’s fair in love and cheese — that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life — on an anonymous chat app Jack built.

As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate — people on the internet are shipping them?? — their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected.

Review:

Tweet Cute is, well, VERY cute. A YA contemporary done right producing all the feels of the teenage experience without being too predictable. I’ve read my fair share of YA that revolves around modern meets through social media and I think that this is one of the best so far.

The character dynamics and reactions feels genuine and well thought through. I especially like that the teen characters didn’t naturally fit together from the start. They clash, grow and mesh together.

The one negative that I have for this book is that the narration of the two main characters Pepper and Jack are somewhat similar and if I didn’t read the chapter headers I sometimes mistook whose perspective I was reading from. The main characters are stinking cute though, together and individually. Even with similar “inner voices”.

The plotlines are well managed with twists and turns, a solid background that gave me a light bulb moment when revealed and when you’re thinking “huh, the story came to this point way faster than expected”. Don’t worry, there’s more and it’s intriguingly unfolding before your eyes. I think the plotlines all complement each other and furthers the story, in opposed to it dragging on for too long (as the case can be for stories such as these, where you wonder why the book didn’t end after 2/3 of it).

For a debut, Tweet Cute is well written and engrossing. I’ll be on the lookout for more books by this author!

A huge thank you to Wednesday Books (St. Martin’s Press) for including me in the blog tour for Tweet Cute!

His Royal Highness by R.S. Grey (arc)

“I didn’t get a good look at her last night, the elevator doors sliding closed before I connected the dots of who she was. Now, those glimpses come together to form an image I can’t quite reconcile. In the years I’ve been away, Whitney has blossomed. For every year I grew older, she did too.”

I loved this story! It has a prince returning home from a faraway land, a princess who’s adored by all, a castle with turrets, fairytale lands and a love story that starts with an unrequited love. Intrigued yet? What if I say that this is a MODERN fairytale, in other words the kingdom is an enterprise, the fairytale lands are a theme park, the prince is the CEOs grandson, the princess is a popular character played by one of the main characters and the castle is purple. Yep, purple. You’d think that all this would turn the whole story corny, but R.S. Grey has magicked this into something charming and sweet instead. Even the cringeworthy and laugh out loud moments were charming. The story was fast paced without feeling like it, the characters were relatable and it was hard to stop reading once you’d started it. In short, you need to read this if you love contemporary romance and have a weakness for Happily Ever Afters.

About HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS by R.S. Grey – Available Now

I’ve spent eight years wishing I’d fall out of love with Derek Knightley. Blowing out birthday candles, chasing after shooting stars, making it rain spare change into mall fountains—every time it’s the same wish: forget about Derek.

But the day he walks back into my life, I realize there are two things time has yet to soften: my feelings for him and his chiseled jawline.

It’s infuriating that my heart still races when he walks into a room. I refuse to fall prey to old unrequited love, so I decide the less I’m around him, the better. Avoidance is key.

Unfortunately, Derek isn’t going to make it easy. As a teenager, I would have crawled on my hands and knees to attract his attention. Now I can’t seem to escape it.

I’m not sure why he’s bothering. He’s not just out of my league—he’s out of my tax bracket. As the sole heir to the Knightley Company, he’s as close to American royalty as you can get. As for me, I’m just a part-time princess at Knightley’s flagship magical theme park.

I spend my days playing make-believe, but Derek has no use for fairytales. His unwavering confidence makes it clear he thinks I’ll surrender in the end.

He’s just biding his time.
Making me sweat.

His Royal Highness always gets what he wants.

The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken (arc)

Descending from a great line of female blacksmith’s, all Keeley wanted when she grew up was to follow in her mother’s footsteps but when a prophecy pertaining the coronation of her sister reaches the corners of the kingdom and beyond, it’s the start of a series of events that will put a wrench in Keeleys dreams.

Oh how I’ve missed this world and the writing of G.A. Aiken. She always has these hilariously outrageous and dramatic characters in her books, always making me smile. Aiken writes the most funny dysfunctional but endearing characters and relationships. I love how she has these stereotypical alpha males and turn their worlds upside down by introducing them to strong quirky females, often with some unhinged qualities like problems with rage and/or happy go lucky attitudes. Often with personality traits that should be opposites, making for some weird but funny scenes. I know, it sounds ridiculous, but it works like magic. I loved that Aiken centered this story around a big crazy family again, emotions running high and so many strong unique characters. Some more insane than others. The dynamics and plotlines were so much fun to follow, and I can’t wait to read the next installment! As always, this was a fast paced adventure and if you don’t mind some strong verbal abuse with a big dose of humor, this one is for you! Be ready for silly emotional outbursts, screaming and name calling!

The Love Solution by Ashley Croft (arc)

Oh, how I wish I could give this one a higher rating, because I enjoyed the writing style very much. In fact, that’s why this book gets 2.5 instead of 1.5 stars in the end. I can’t ignore that the storytelling was very smooth, but unfortunately I can’t ignore that this book has a problematic plot element either. One akin to drugging and emotional abuse. It doesn’t matter that one of the two main characters has a legitimate reason to be desperate and not thinking clearly, but it’s a long way from thinking to actually trying to achieve the means to do it. And the other main character has no excuse, other than being a sister and there’s a lot I would do for my siblings, but there are limits. I mean, I understand that there are individuals in the real world that lack this filter, that actually do horrible stuff to other people, but these two main characters just didn’t read that way at first. There are so many ways the author could have spun this plot element without crossing the line. It’s weird really, I can read about murder, psychopaths and violence without much trouble, but this plot element, in this type of book, made me pause. Maybe it’s because I didn’t expect it, wrong context or something, it’s supposed to be a contemporary romance right? A bit of heart ache and drama is expected, but planning on taking away another’s will? Akin to drugging them? It made me question if they were good at all and whether they deserved their happily ever afters. Not what you usually feel in a romance novel, even if a character misbehaves and make mistakes. Like I said, it could have been a really cute addition in the story, maybe a joke throughout the book or something. And maybe I’m reading to much into this, but that’s how I felt and in the end this book wasn’t for me.
The above aside, I did like the writing style enough that I won’t hesitate to pick up another book by the same author.

Beyond the Limit by Cindy Dees (arc)

This was the GI Jane story I didn’t know I needed. I knew that I was going to like it, but not how much (which is always a good kind of surprise) and I think it is a great addition to the women in military category.

We follow two main protagonists. First being Skylar who gets selected together with two other women to become the first ever female Navy SEALs and their grueling training in the hands of the Reaper SEAL platoon and their leader Griffin. To prepare both the military and the rest of the world for female SEALs they train in secret to ascertain that the women that that’s been selected have what it takes before they take on the real SEAL training that have a very high failure rate in general.

Skylar knows all about being a media officer for the Navy, but she wants to go out on real missions in the field. She knows that she has what it takes, but the question is if she can convince others, especially the arrogant and obnoxious platoon leader that is determined to fail her.

As the Reaper platoon leader, Griffin can’t foresee anything but trouble if women joined the SEAL teams and it’s not only about gender aptitudes. Now this pageant beauty queen think she’s got what it takes?

Then one mission goes haywire and drags them both into it’s maw. Will they overcome their differences in time and trust each other enough to survive the coming troubles?

I loved the chemistry between everyone, not only between the main characters. There’s also a charming bonding between the three women and a cheeky camaraderie between the Reapers. I loved that everything between characters (feelings, concessions and actions) plus responses to situations felt believable within the premises of the story.

This was a great start on a series and I hope we get to know the other women and Reapers in the coming installments.

Waiting for Tom Hanks by Kerry Winfrey

Adorable, quirky and fun, this may be one of my favorite rom coms of 2019. As you may know by now, or maybe not, I’m a sucker for expertly written quirky main characters. Make Me Bad is another favorite of this year and surprise, it also has a quirky female lead. It’s my fave personality trait when reading a book. It doesn’t have to be romance either. Quirky characters in whatever genre and gender, and I’m sold. Hook, line and sinker.
The MC in Waiting for Tom Hanks is obsessed with rom com culture and is looking for her soulmate. In her mind Tom Hanks stars in some of the best rom coms out there (yeah, he kind of does) and thus is the epitome of how a soulmate should be. This leads to many obsessive moments, good reflections and emotional scenes. My favorite part was the endearing cast of characters and the relationships between them. I absolutely loved all the interactions, which felt very small town (at least the fiction/movie version of one) and I’m so happy that there will be a second companion book in the series so I can visit these characters again. Especially Gary from the diner, he was absolutely hilarious!
